Building a Foundation That Stands Firm: Leadership Connector, Support

"support is a basic need. ....this basic need must be met for people to be successful."

As I read this chapter I found myself thinking back to when I first joined the staff at my school site 15 years ago. It was a brand new school and it was my first permanent full time teaching position in CUSD. I could not have asked for more support. Everyone was willing to help in a variety of ways. It certainly made the beginning of my teaching career easier and enjoyable.
As I read on my experiences as a BTSA support provider came to mind. I have had good and not so good experiences. The good experiences have developed into lasting relationships and have become relationships that are mutually supporting, each of us listening and sorting through the other's concern, confusion, or frustration together.
Support for beginning teachers is extremely important but as a leader we must remember that all of our staff will need support from time to time. It could be for personal or professional reasons but it will happen. Being visible and knowing the staff will help me to stay in touch and determine who might need a note of encouragement, a treat in their mailbox, or perhaps just a smile to help them get through a hard time. Another instance when "knowing the story" of my colleagues is important!

  1. I am very thankful for the current BTSA program available to new teachers. Even though I grumbled about all the assignments required the insight I gained from my own reflections truly helped me become a capable teacher. Teachers also need validation that their efforts are appreciated and the praise needs to include specific comments about individuals not just general staff ones. Great reflection on the support chapter.

  2. I can’t agree with you more that ALL teachers need support especially beginner teachers. In many schools, new teachers are left to fend for themselves in a sink or swim situation. To add to the stress of beginner teachers, many are required to coach or participate in co-curricular activity. A little support from staff can make a world of a difference to a beginner teacher.

  3. I didn't realize how alone teachers are in their classrooms, especially new teachers. I've always have worked as a team, as a counselor and prior to working in education. I look forward to working with new teachers and give them the support they need to be the best teacher they can be.

  4. Great comments on the value of BTSA. A study was done about 7-8 years ago and showed that teachers with BTSA support left the districts at half the rate of new teachers without support. That's a 50% reduction.

So, how can we do BTSA for all teachers? Is that a good idea? If so, what would it look like?

    Good thoughts, Marci,

  5. Dr. Wise, wouldn't that be something-every teacher with a support provider! My last experience being a support provider has led to a great relationship with my former beginning teacher. I think we will continue to meet over the years to lend support to one another. I have just been assigned a new beginning teacher and will meet with her in a few days. I am excited to begin a new supporting relationship with her!
